The sincerest form of flattery
Every good idea is derived from or built upon the ideas of others. We draw inspiration from peers and predecessors.
If we’re paying attention, we’ll notice good ideas all around us. And we can collect them, pull them through the filter of our own perspective, and put them back out into the world to reach a new or larger audience.
That article you wish you’d written? Write one just like it.
That existing business you wish you’d started first? Copy it and build it your own way.
The product idea that seems so obvious? Create your own version of that same product.
What we create will be different because it will have passed through filters of our own experiences, strengths, style, and preferences.
It may even be better than the original.
Bob Dylan’s original version of All Along the Watchtower is good.
But Jimi Hendrix’s cover of All Along the Watchtower is on a different level.
